DB111929 - The fall of Númenor: and other tales from the second age of Middle-earth by J.R.R. Tolkien has been Withdrawn by NLS, and the file was pulled from Gutenberg devices last night.

Scribe libraries: this file is still present on the Scribe file storage, so you can choose whether or not to Withdraw the title. If you find that the file is not working, please reply here to let everyone know.
Gutenberg libraries: please Withdraw the title, or at least delete any lingering eDoc, to prevent this title from getting into orders and causing duplication errors.

To Withdraw the title:
  • Set the Title Status to "Withdrawn"
  • Mark the OPAC Suppressed checkbox
  • Remove all Subject Headings
  • Delete the eDoc (if present)
For more information on Withdrawing catalog records, please see out this article on   Withdrawn Titles .

You can also use the Patrons with Queued Title report (patron module - reports - items and titles) to find any patrons with this title in their Service Queue or in a pending Duplication Order.

If there are patrons that requested this title specifically, you can leave the Request in place (or add a Request, if the title was originally added directly to their Service Queue); KLAS will ignore that request for as long as the title status is Withdrawn, but if NLS makes a new version of the file available and you re-activate the title, or if they make the book available under a new number and your Reissue the title, those patrons will get the title as soon as their queues refill.

RE: if we decide not to withdraw the title. Do we know why it was withdrawn by NLS? Is there something wrong with the audio files? We don't want to have it go out just to have patrons get frustrated.

We do not know why it was Withdrawn. Since there doesn't appear to be a duplicate title, it is probably safer to follow NLS' lead and Withdraw the title, at least until more information is available.

Too bad about this. There has been a great deal of renewed interest in the legendarium since the Amazon series launched. NLS recorded many, but by no means all, of Tolkien's posthumous works.

Hopefully a corrected or alternate version will be available soon. NLS may be able to provide more information.

Replied by rfreitas on topic Withdrawn Title: DB111929
You mentioned what to do if patrons requested the title specifically. Unfortunately, the Patrons with a Queued Title report doesn't indicate the Select Type, so I would have to sift through the 90 patrons with this title in their queue to see if any were requests. Could Select Type be added as a column in future versions of this report?
Also, am I right to assume that, for those patrons who didn't request the title specifically, it's not necessary to do anything?
Thank you!

For patrons who didn't request the title specifically:
1. Definitely cancel any Duplication Orders with the withdrawn title, and remake them without it.
2. I would recommend deleting the title from their Service Queue, so a well-meaning RA doesn't tell them that it's queued up next... BUT, it won't advance to a Dup Order once the Title Status is set to withdrawn and/or the eDoc is gone, and KLAS will clean it up eventually, so when it's that many patrons, I can certainly understand waiting.
I'll pass on the request to add the Select Type to the report!

Update! The file has re-appeared. Judging by the file size, the version now available on Gutenberg devices is different from the original that was stored on books.klas.com for the Scribes.

Gutenberg libraries: make the title record Active again if you Withdrew it. If you did not originally delete the eDoc, delete it now so it can be re-created pointing to the new version of the file. If you deleted it previously, you're all set!

Scribe libraries: We have removed the old version from our storage to ensure that the new file syncs in. Please wait until tomorrow (Friday June 16), then delete the old eDoc. You can also make the title record Active again at this time. Friday night, a new eDoc will be generated against the new version of the file.
